Outrage as Swiss Hotel Orders ‘Jewish Guests’ To Shower Before Swimming

A hotel in Switzerland put up signs telling “Jewish guests” to shower before swimming, sparking outrage from the guests and an official complaint from the Foreign Ministry on Monday.
The Paradies apartment hotel in the Alpine village of Arosa in eastern Switzerland is being accused of anti-Semitism after an outraged guest posted to Facebook a picture of a notice plastered outside the hotel pool.

“To our Jewish Guests, women, men and children, please take a shower before you go swimming,” it said, adding that “If you break the rules I’m forced to (close) the swimming pool for you.”

A second notice, in the kitchen, meanwhile instructed “Our Jewish guests” that they could only access the facility’s freezer between 10 and 11 am and between 4:30 and 5:30 pm.

“I hope you understand that our team does not like being disturbed all the time,” it said.

The story quickly made the rounds on social media and was published by Israeli papers, prompting a harsh reaction from Israeli officials.
Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely described the incident as “an anti-Semitic act of the worst and ugliest kind.”

Israel’s ambassador to Switzerland, Jacob Keidar, reportedly contacted the hotel and informed Hotovely the signs had been removed.
But she was not satisfied and has reportedly demanded “a formal condemnation” from Bern.
Swiss foreign ministry spokesman Tilman Renz told AFP in an email that the ministry had been in contact with Keidar and had “outlined to him that Switzerland condemns racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination in any form.”

Paradies manager Ruth Thomann, who signed the notices, meanwhile insisted to Swiss daily 20 minutes that she was not an anti-Semite, and acknowledged that her “choice of words was a mistake.”
The report said the hotel was popular with ultra-Orthodox Jewish guests from around the world because it was usually very accommodating to their needs.
The hotel management told Channel 2 it meant no harm by the signs. “There was no anti-Semitic intent and the signs were removed,” it said. “We have no problem with Jewish guests at the hotel.”

The hotel explained why, it said, the signs related specifically to Jews.

“The sign on the freezer was hung because only Jews used the workers’ refrigerator,” it said. “The sign regarding the showers was hung after two Jewish girls entered without taking a shower, ignoring a sign addressed to all guests. Therefore, a specific sign was hung to focus their attention on this.”
