    COVID-19 Cases Hit New Record High in Nigeria

    The current surge of cases shows no signs of slowing down. Health authorities consider stricter measures as new cases surpassed the 1,000 mark again since the pandemic began.

    Daily coronavirus cases in Nigeria reached a record 1,354 on Tuesday, and 1 additional deaths from COVID-19, marking the highest daily tally for a second straight day, as Lagos and several other states in the country continued to report record numbers of infections amid growing concern over the strain on the medical system.

    The country’s infectious disease agency NCDC also disclosed that 697 people were discharged after recovered from the disease.

    Nigeria has tested 980,046 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on 27 February 2020.

    According to the latest data released by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Lagos continues to be the most affected state, with 712 new infections reported. The commercial city is Nigeria’s coronavirus hotspot with  total of 32,687 infections and 250 fatalities as at today, about a third of the country’s total inflections.

    Other states with new coronavirus infections are FCT-145, Plateau-117, Kwara-81, Kaduna-54, Sokoto-39, Oyo-38, Rivers-37, Gombe-21, Enugu-20, Akwa Ibom-16, Bauchi-14, Delta-14, Ebonyi-13, Anambra-9, Taraba-8, Edo-8, Kano-3, Osun-2 Ekiti-2 and Ogun-1. 

    According to NCDC on the 5th of January 2021, 1,354 new confirmed cases and 1 death was recorded in Nigeria.

    Till date, 92,705 cases have been confirmed, 76,396 cases have been discharged and 1,319 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
