FC Barcelona forward Ansu Fati has inherited the number 10
jersey famously worn by Lionel Messi for over a decade until his departure to
Paris Saint-Germain, the club announced Wednesday.
The 18-year-old is one of the young stars Ronald Koeman
hopes can help turn the team’s fortunes around after a tumultuous year of
financial issues that led to the departures of Luis Suarez and, during this
year’s summer transfer window, Antoine Griezmann.
Fati is still recovering from a torn meniscus that put him
out of action for 10 months and required three surgeries.
He is widely regarded as one of Spain’s future stars and
despite his age has already played in 43 games for Barcelona, in which he
scored 13 goals and provided five assists.
Messi inherited the number 10 shirt from Ronaldinho and it
has been worn by some of the club’s most famous players, including Rivaldo,
Romario, Michael Laudrop and Diego Maradona.
