Eguavoen was appointed as interim coach of
the Super Eagles after the Nigeria Football Federation relieved Gernot Rohr of
his duties in February.
This is not the first time that Eguavoen
was in charge of the national team as he led Nigeria to a bronze medal place at
the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former defender also served in an
interim capacity in 2010, after the departure of Lars Lagerback, before Samson
Siasia was appointed.
After Ghana secured the World Cup ticket at
the expense of Nigeria, Eguavoen who immediately tendered his resignation
latter has disclosed that he remains one of the best coaches in Nigeria and
will be glad to lead the team again.
Eguavoen said during SuperSports’ program,
Monday Night Football: “If there is still an opportunity for me, I will want to
coach the Eagles again, but not at this moment, maybe later.
“If I’m called upon to lead the team again,
I will definitely take up the job. I’m still one of the good coaches in the
country. I can still prove a point it’s just a matter of time.
“No regrets taking up the job. When you are
called to serve the nation I could not refuse them.”
Amokachi hails Osimhen Former Super Eagles
star Daniel Amokachi has singled out Victor Osimhen as the only player who
worked tirelessly against Ghana to ensure Nigeria qualified for the 2022 World
Cup.
According to him, Osimhen knows what it
means to represent Nigeria at the World Cup, something some players born abroad
in the current Super Eagles team don't understand.
Amokachi noted that Osimhen knows what it
takes to play for Nigeria because he once hawked pure water on Third Mainland
Bridge in Lagos.
Ousted Gernot Rohr reacts Former Super
Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has spoken for the first time after Nigeria failed to
qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
The Franco-German was fired by the Nigeria
Football Federation shortly after qualifying the team for the World Cup
play-off and Augustine Eguavoen was appointed to qualify the team for the
tournament in Qatar.
Having played a 0-0 draw with the Black
Stars in Kumasi, Ghana held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Abuja to proceed to the
World Cup proper.
