Today 19 June 2023, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General H. E. Ambassador Youssef Al-Dobeay addressed the opening session of the UN high level conference of the heads of counter-terrorism agencies in the member states, which was convened under the theme, "Addressing Terrorism through Reinvigorated Multilateralism and Institutional Cooperation."

In his statement to the high level session that was also addressed by H.E. Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General and H.E. Mr. Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th Session of the United Nations and many ministers and dignitaries, Ambassador Al-Dobeay expressed OIC's dedication and commitment towards addressing the challenges in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. The OIC also expressed its readiness to stand by the international community including the relevant UN agencies in their efforts to combat terrorism and address challenges.

The two-day conference will continue to discuss during its various upcoming thematic high-level miniterial sessions the ever growing and emerging threats of terrorism in different parts of the world and explore ways and means to overcome these threats and challenges through inter-alia enhancing regional and international Cooperation and sharing information and best practices as well as raising awareness and building capacity in the UN member states.


During the ongoing counter-terrorism week, the UN and its member states and international organizations will hold side events and activities. These include the expected adoption of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy Review resolution by the UN General Assembly.


Furthermore, the United Nations Office of the Counter-Terrorims (UNOCT) in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of the OIC and the Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union in New York, will convene a side event on the issue of terrorism and copperation among regional organizations.
