The Academic Staff Union of Universities convenes an important National Executive Council meeting at the University of Ibadan.

The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced yesterday, aimed at addressing several contentious issues impacting the welfare of its members and the ongoing conflict with the Federal Government.

This significant meeting has the potential to influence academic operations within the Nigerian University System (NUS), based on the resolutions passed during various branch congresses.

Originally scheduled for the previous week, the meeting was postponed due to the #Endbadgovernance protest. Prior to the NEC meeting, ASUU accused the Federal Government of neglecting to implement the 2009 agreement and failing to disburse the withheld salaries of its members.

The meeting, taking place at the ASUU Secretariat at the University of Ibadan (UI), is anticipated to deliberate on the resolutions from branch congresses.

It is noteworthy that ASUU has twice delayed the decision to initiate a strike this year, owing to last-minute interventions from the Federal Government.

A chairperson from one of the ASUU branches confirmed the meeting's occurrence and indicated that the previously postponed strike in early August remains a possibility.

The NEC meeting began on Saturday and is expected to conclude later on Sunday night. Among the union's demands are the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government, the payment of withheld salaries to members, the use of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for salary payments, the settlement of earned academic allowances, and the addressing of victimization issues faced by members in certain state universities.
