Aviation employees have opted to cancel their anticipated protest regarding the Federal Government's request for a 50 percent revenue collection from the agencies.
The strike was scheduled to take place today (Wednesday).
Nnadi Hector, the Secretary of the Joint Aviation Trade Unions Forum, indicated
that the protest was called off following a government directive aimed at
alleviating tensions within the aviation industry.
Hector elaborated on the recent demonstrations conducted by
aviation unions, underscoring their peaceful purpose to draw attention to the
difficulties encountered by industry agencies.
"Aviation globally operates as a service industry; the
President's intervention was generous, although we have yet to receive a formal
letter," Hector remarked, alluding to the presidential directive.
"He instructed, while he was abroad, that the revenue
deduction be reduced to 20 percent. This is a positive development."
It is important to note that just a week prior, aviation
workers throughout Nigeria had resolved to initiate a nationwide protest
beginning on August 21, 2024, in response to the Federal Government's ongoing
deduction of 50 percent from the internally generated revenue of essential
aviation agencies.
The unions had communicated this decision in a letter dated
August 14, 2024, titled, "Save Aviation From Collapse."
