Boeing's office in Africa is scheduled to begin operations in October 2024, as announced by Henok Teferra, the Managing Director of Boeing Africa.
In a discussion with state media, Henok highlighted that the choice to locate Boeing's African headquarters in Addis Ababa was driven by Ethiopia's significant progress in the aviation industry and its role as a pivotal hub on the continent.
"The launch of Boeing's African office in Addis Ababa will allow us to deepen and broaden our partnership with Ethiopian Airlines across multiple sectors," Henok remarked.
He further mentioned that this new office will create opportunities for Ethiopia to strengthen its position as the premier aviation center in Africa. "Boeing will work closely with Ethiopian Airlines, especially in the collaborative production of aircraft components," he added.
Henok explained that Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines have established a strategic alliance aimed at the production of essential aircraft components in two key areas. "Ethiopian Airlines has been engaged in the manufacturing and supply of wire harnesses for Boeing, while Boeing is assisting Ethiopian Airlines in the production of insulation blankets at the Kilinto Industrial Park," he stated.
This announcement comes on the heels of Boeing's decision, made nearly three months prior, to select Ethiopia as the site for its new African headquarters, opting for it over Kenya and South Africa.
This strategic choice positions Ethiopia as a prime location for Boeing's growth initiatives on the continent.
Looking to the future, Boeing anticipates that African airlines will need 1,030 new jet aircraft in the next two decades, with 80% of these deliveries aimed at enhancing current fleets.
