The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is poised to conclude the protracted search for a new Super Eagles manager. Reports indicate that the NFF has identified Jan Olof ‘Janne’ Andersson as the preferred candidate to assume the role of head coach.

Andersson, a 61-year-old football professional, previously served as the manager of the Sweden national team from 2016 to 2023.

During his tenure, he successful” guided Sweden to the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euros. However, he was unable to secure qualification for the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Euros.

It Is noteworthy that Mr. Andersson lacks prior working experience in Africa. Nevertheless, the NFF has opted to appoint him, deviating from the previously shortlisted coaches, which included Herve Renard, Eric Chelle, Tom Saintfiet, and Steve McClaren.

Historically, Sweden has had a presence in Nigerian football. Lars Lagerback, a Swedish coach, managed the Super Eagles during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, although the team failed to progress beyond the first round.

Additionally, Thomas Denerby, another Swedish coach, led the Super Falcons to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
