An explosion occurred at a Mobil fuel station situated near the Airport Hotel on Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, leading to widespread alarm among local residents. While the specifics of the incident remain unclear at this time, there is speculation that it may have originated from a gas filling point.
However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has
clarified that the fire is unrelated to the recently launched compressed
natural gas station operated by NNPC Gas Marketing Limited and NIPCO.
According to a statement from NNPC spokesman Olufemi Soneye,
"The NNPC Ltd wishes to emphasize that the explosion reported at a filling
station in Ikeja, Lagos, is not connected to the newly commissioned NNPC Gas
Marketing Ltd (NGML)/NIPCO Compressed Natural Gas Stations, which are currently
operating safely without any incidents."
He further stated that the CNG station remained unaffected
by the explosion. "The NNPC Ltd also wishes to clarify that the NGML was
not impacted by the explosion; it is not associated with the operations of the
affected station, and all NGML facilities in Lagos, including pipelines,
metering stations, above-ground installations, and CNG facilities, are
functioning safely," he added.
