Tomatoes and Yam Experience Significant Price Reduction in the Nigerian Market.
The National Bureau of Statistics reported a decrease in the
prices of tomatoes and yams on a month-over-month basis in July 2024.
According to the bureau’s latest report on Selected Food
Price Watch for July, the price of 1kg of tomatoes dropped by 26.43% from
N2,302.26 in June 2024 to N1,693.83 in July.
However, tomatoes still experienced a significant 203.57%
increase year-over-year, rising from N557.96 in July 2023 to N1,693.83 in July
2024.
Similarly, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber decreased
by 10.82% from N2,021.55 in June 2024 to N1,802.84 in July.
Despite this monthly decline, yams saw a substantial 234.23%
increase year-over-year, moving from N539.41 in July 2023 to N1,802.84 in July
2024.
In contrast, the prices of eggs, beans, and garri increased
on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis during the period under
review.
