The Yoruba-language film Lakatabu, produced and starring the prominent actor Odunlade Adekola, has achieved remarkable box office success in Nigeria, amassing N200 million.

This film has quickly ascended to become one of the highest-grossing Nollywood productions of 2024. During its opening weekend, Lakatabu generated N47 million, marking it as the third-highest opening of the year, with over 11,000 tickets sold.

Within just one week, its earnings rose to N94 million, and by June 30, 2024, the total gross reached N126 million, ultimately exceeding N200 million. Premiering on June 21, 2024, Lakatabu swiftly established itself as a significant success in the Nigerian film landscape.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), it was the top-grossing Nollywood film from June 21 to June 27, 2024, earning nearly N65 million in that week alone. The film's impressive box office results coincide with a growing trend of Yoruba-language films gaining traction on streaming services.

Titles such as Anikulapo, Ijogbon, Jagun Jagun, and Ayinla have achieved notable success on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax, highlighting the increasing global interest in this genre.

The success of Lakatabu positions it among other distinguished Yoruba-language Nollywood films, including Kayode Kasum’s Ajosepo, which achieved over N250 million in box office revenue, and Eniola Ajao’s Ajakaju: Beast of Two Worlds, which similarly grossed N250 million before its release on Amazon Prime.

The accomplishments of Yoruba-language cinema were highlighted, particularly with Femi Adebayo’s Jagun Jagun, which earned the Best Indigenous Film award.

Lakatabu narrates the tale of a magical armed robber who instills terror through acts of kidnapping and murder.

The plot thickens as the main character confronts threats from adversaries, delving into the obstacles he faces and the fear he generates.

Odunlade Adekola continues to enhance his reputation for producing high-grossing films, following his performance in Orisa, which garnered N127 million.

Renowned for his captivating performances and directorial expertise, Adekola has significantly influenced the industry, both in front of and behind the camera.

His ability to resonate with audiences has earned him two Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), showcasing his adaptability in both comedic and dramatic roles.

Lakatabu is further strengthened by a talented ensemble cast featuring prominent Nollywood actors such as Adunni Ade, Femi Adebayo, Lateef Adedimeji, Temidayo Adenibuyan (also known as Tope Adenibuyan), Eniola Ajao, and Bolaji Amusan. These performers add depth to the film, broadening its appeal to a diverse audience.

The film's production quality is enhanced by the efforts of key crew members, with Sanjo Adegoke serving as both cinematographer and editor, ensuring exceptional visual storytelling and pacing.

Opeyemi Sodunke acted as assistant director, aiding the overall direction of the film, while the sound department, led by Olabode Odeyemi, played a vital role in crafting the film’s immersive experience.
