Super Eagles’ Ademola Lookman has been nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, an award presented to the best male football player in the world.
He’s a forward for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has received
a nomination for the 2024 men’s Ballon d’Or award.
The shortlist, revealed by France Football Magazine on
Wednesday, features the 26-year-old Atalanta player among 29 contenders for
this prestigious accolade.
Notably, he is the sole African representative on the list.
This year, the eight-time winner and current titleholder
Lionel Messi, along with five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, are absent from
the nominations.
Lookman showcased exceptional talent last season,
contributing significantly to Atalanta's historic achievement of securing their
first European trophy, highlighted by his hat-trick in the Europa League final
against Bayer Leverkusen.
Overall, he netted 17 goals and provided 11 assists for
Atalanta during the season.
Additionally, Lookman played a crucial role in the Super
Eagles' journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Cote d’Ivoire
earlier this year, scoring two goals as Nigeria finished as runners-up after a
2-1 defeat to the host nation.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or nominations are heavily influenced by
players from the Spanish national team, which triumphed in Euro 2024, and the
Real Madrid squad that claimed the UEFA Champions League title.
Among the prominent names on the list are Jude Bellingham,
Vini Junior, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe.
