The discussions, held on Friday morning, also laid the groundwork for a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) aimed at strengthening and fostering mutually beneficial aviation relations between the two countries.
Accompanied by his technical team, the Minister engaged with UAE aviation officials to facilitate the seamless reintroduction of Emirates Airlines into Nigerian airspace, scheduled for next Tuesday.
Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, stated that the new BASA, a key topic of the discussions, is intended to enhance cooperation between the nations and establish a framework for their developing partnership in the aviation industry.
“Crucially, the negotiations also yielded a significant agreement on reciprocal rights, ensuring that Nigerian airlines will soon have the opportunity to commence direct flight operations to the UAE.
“This marks a historic development for Nigeria’s aviation industry, expanding international connectivity and offering more options to travellers between the two nations,” Moshood said.
In reference to the meeting’s conclusion, Festus Keyamo provided the following statement, “Today’s discussions reaffirm our commitment to fostering a balanced and forward-looking partnership with the UAE.
We are pleased to have secured reciprocal operational rights for Nigerian airlines, which will not only deepen our bilateral ties but also strengthen the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation industry. As Emirates returns to Nigeria, we look forward to a thriving and mutually beneficial air service relationship.”
This advancement comes after several weeks of diplomatic and technical discussions focused on reinstating direct air travel between Nigeria and the UAE. It underscores the Federal Government's commitment to achieving optimal results for both Nigerian and international travelers.
The resumption of flight operations by Emirates, along with the new Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), is expected to significantly enhance tourism, business, and cultural interactions between Nigeria and the UAE, thereby contributing to economic development.
