WHO IS DOTTi the Deity
If you manage an Instagram account, especially as a prominent member of the ‘God when’ community, you have likely encountered numerous touching wedding or proposal videos featuring DOTTi the Deity’s song Forever Sweet as background music. However, how well do Forever Sweet enthusiasts truly know DOTTi the Deity himself?
Born Okeowo Oladotun Alani, DOTTi the Deity hails from Ibadan, where he began to exhibit his musical talents at the tender age of six. He later pursued a degree in Music Technology at the Polytechnic, Ibadan.
His unique sound draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Nigerian folk music, intertwined with elements of modern jazz, soul, and pop. Influences on his music include notable artists such as Fatoumata Diawara, Mali Music, Asa, Lagbaja, King Sunny Ade, and Oumou Sangare.
DOTTi the Deity embarked on his musical journey in 2019 with the release of his single "Jolly Christmas," following numerous attempts to establish himself while living with his grandfather in Lagos. He subsequently released his debut extended play, "Songs in Isolation," which was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and produced in the same year.
After performing at several live events in 2022, he launched his popular single "Forever Sweet," a celebration of enduring and timeless love.
DOTTi the Deity's second EP, titled For You Knew Me, was released in 2023, accompanied by an intimate live performance that successfully united his fan community.
In June 2023, he took the stage as the headliner for his own event in Lagos, organized by Beeriga. Building on the success of this initial show and aiming to further engage his audience, DOTTi the Deity headlined another concert in July 2023 at the esteemed Nature Brewery, a venue known for hosting top-tier artists such as Yemi Alade and Ric Hassani.
Recently, he showcased his talent at Indie Night Live, following an invitation from Ric Hassani, and participated in two editions of Make Music Lagos, as well as The Alte Festival.
In 2021, DOTTi the Deity emerged victorious in the inaugural Y’ello Star competition, a musical initiative by MTN Nigeria designed to discover and promote young musical talents. After being selected for the program, he underwent mentoring and practical training with industry veterans, ultimately distinguishing himself and claiming the title of the show's winner.
Although DOTTi the Deity is a relatively new figure in the music industry, he is far from inexperienced. Prior to launching his official music career, he cultivated and sustained professional connections with prominent artists such as Omawumi and Cobams Asuquo.
He has also had the opportunity to perform alongside seasoned musicians like Rotimi Keys, Sir Victor Uwaifo, and Onyeka Onwenu. In addition to his talents as a singer and songwriter, he has demonstrated his versatility by creating jingles for radio and television commercials, including the campaign song "Wealth is Here" for the British American Tobacco Foundation.
