Renowned Greek singer Marinella experienced a stroke during her performance on Wednesday night at the Herod Atticus Theatre in Athens. The 86-year-old artist lost her footing and fell while singing her third song.

The concert, which was also expected to feature fellow Greek artist Antonis Remos, was promptly canceled. A statement from Hygeia Hospital on Thursday indicated that Marinella is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit for significant brain bleeding.

Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in May 1938 in Thessaloniki, she adopted her stage name early in her career, which began in earnest in the mid-1950s in her hometown. Marinella has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over six decades.

A beloved figure among generations of Greeks, she has maintained a powerful stage presence well into her 80s.

As the youngest of four siblings, her talent was evident from a young age; she recalled her first public performance at around four or five years old, when she sang a piece by Austrian composer Franz Schubert on a children's radio show, as she shared in an interview with the Greek publication Lifo in June.
