The Governor made these remarks on Sunday after attending a performance of the stage play 'Kurunmi,' authored by the esteemed playwright, Prof. Ola Rotimi, at Terra Kulture in Victoria Island, Lagos. The play delves into themes of traditional supremacy, social transformation, responsible leadership, control, and accountability.
'Kurunmi' featured an impressive ensemble of 75 actors, both emerging talents and seasoned veterans, and was performed at the Terra Kulture Arena on September 28 and 29. The production was organized by Stagecraft Studios and Film Productions.
Accompanying Governor Sanwo-Olu were his Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, along with other close aides. The play was produced by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, and directed by the well-known filmmaker and actor, Mr. Oladapo Muyideen, affectionately known as 'Lala.'
The event also attracted prominent executives from First Bank, a key sponsor, as well as notable Nollywood figures, including Yemi Solade, Mercy Aigbe Adeoti, and her husband, Kazeem Adeoti, among others.
Regarding the stage play’s command performance, Governor Sanwo-Olu remarked, “Kurunmi is a powerful exploration of themes such as the supremacy of tradition, social change, responsible leadership, control, and accountability. Set in the Yoruba kingdom of Oyo, Ijaiye, and Ibadan, the play follows Kurunmi, a military leader and war general, as he navigates internal strife and external threats from imperial powers.
“The play is produced by my media aide, Gboyega Akosile, and directed by Mr. Oladapo Muyideen.
“I firmly believe that our support for the arts and creative sector is crucial for fostering an environment where this industry can thrive. Our commitment is reflected in our investments in various initiatives, including training, manpower development, and arts promotion, among others.”
Regarding the stage play, Mercy Aigbe Adeoti commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support of the arts.: “Watching the play KURUMI tonight gave me a nostalgic feeling! It took me back to my theatre arts days at the university. I really do miss the stage!
“Well done to the amazing cast and crew; it was a great watch! Special shout out to the Executive Producer, Gboyega Akosile, and the Artistic Director, Lala.”
The weekend's staging of the play received backing from the Lagos State Government, specifically through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. This initiative aims to promote historical heritage and safeguard African culture and traditions from fading away, while also raising awareness among the youth about the importance of effective leadership in any context.
Additionally, FirstBank contributed to the event through its First@arts initiative, which focuses on promoting the arts, preserving cultural heritage, and offering a platform for creative expression.
Other sponsors included Nigerian Breweries Plc, represented by its Goldberg beer, which highlights the brand's deep connection to the culture and traditions of its consumers.
