Spotify, a prominent online music streaming platform, has proudly announced the selection of the renowned Afropop sensation, Yemi Alade, as the EQUAL Africa artist for the month of September.

This prestigious recognition underscores Spotify’s commitment to empowering and celebrating female voices within the African music landscape.

In a statement released on Friday in Lagos, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, emphasized the significance of the EQUAL Africa program.

She highlighted its dedication to amplifying the voices of female artists who consistently challenge boundaries and demonstrate exceptional artistry.

“Yemi Alade exemplifies the calibre of talent the programme aims to support.

“Spotify is proud to be associated with Yemi Alade and will continue to use the EQUAL Africa programme to support women in music, amplify their voices and help to showcase their incredible talents to the global audience.”

Okumu highlighted that over her extensive career of more than ten years, Alade has positioned herself as one of the leading and most influential female artists in the Nigerian music scene.

This achievement has garnered her a loyal fanbase, both domestically and abroad. In addressing the topic of Lagos demolitions, real estate agents have expressed their views to Yemi Alade.

Okumu emphasized that the artist's dynamic performances and remarkable vocal abilities have contributed to her global recognition, enabling her to showcase African music on international stages.

She remarked, "Alade's exceptional talent and commanding voice have enchanted audiences worldwide, leading to collaborations with renowned global artists such as Beyoncé, Angélique Kidjo, and Awilo Longomba."

“She has also toured the world, showcasing the rich beauty of African music, captivating audiences across continents and cultures.”

In the meantime, Alade characterized her musical style as a harmonious fusion of high-life pop, R’n’B, and Afrobeat.

“It is a beautiful blend that is inspired by a bit of jazz or blues here and there. If you listen closely you will pick the tones.

“I don’t like to be in a box, but I know that my music is a fusion of African sounds, and the core of my music is African rhythm.”
