Atletico Madrid announced on Monday that a fan has been permanently banned for throwing objects onto the field during the intense derby match against Real Madrid over the weekend. The match, held at Atletico's Estadio Metropolitano, was interrupted for 15 minutes as home supporters hurled items, including lighters, at the Madrid players. Atletico managed to secure a draw with a last-minute equalizer from Angel Correa in the 95th minute.
The club stated, "Our security department is actively collaborating with the police to identify additional individuals involved, who will also face permanent expulsion once identified." They emphasized their unwavering commitment to eliminating all forms of violence and upholding the values of sportsmanship. "We will continue to utilize all available resources to eradicate such behavior," they added.
In response to the incident, Atletico also revealed a modification to their regulations regarding fan attire within the stadium. "The club will soon implement a ban on any item or clothing that obscures a person's face to conceal their identity, a measure not previously included in our regulations," stated the 11-time Spanish champions. "Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate expulsion from the stadium."
Atletico's next home fixture is scheduled for October 20, where they will face Leganes in a La Liga match.
