Communities in Ondo and Delta States where Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) operates are calling on the company to give priority to qualified local candidates for its recently announced job vacancies.

The Host Communities Development Trusts (HCDTs) Forum for CNL in these states has officially urged Chevron to reserve 70% of the available positions for qualified individuals from the local communities.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman and Managing Director of CNL, representatives from the Egbema-OPUDIS HCDT, led by Mr. Edward Doyah-Tiemo, highlighted the significance of this request.

They contended that implementing such a policy would greatly enhance local empowerment and stimulate economic development in the South-West and South-South regions.

“Chevron Nigeria Limited recently published job openings, and we respectfully request that 70 percent preference be given to qualified candidates from the host communities,” the representatives stated. It was asserted that this strategy is in line with Chevron’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals and Nigeria’s Local Content Development Policy.

The communities called on Chevron to transition contract workers from the host regions, particularly those participating in the Vocational Training Program (VTP) 5 and other trainees, into permanent employment roles.

They contended that this transition would bolster job security, enhance employee morale, and facilitate the retention of skills among local workers, while also nurturing a more robust relationship between Chevron and its host communities.

Additionally, the communities suggested that Chevron create a “clear conversion framework” for contract workers from host communities and adopt policies that allocate 70% of contracts to local contractors.

They also requested a meeting between Chevron’s management and leaders of the HCDT to discuss these proposals, emphasizing that such actions would demonstrate Chevron’s dedication to its workforce and local contractors.

Representatives from the host communities believe that addressing these requests would reinforce Chevron’s social responsibility objectives and promote sustainable economic development in their areas.
