First Bank has pledged its support for the creative industry and youth employment by sponsoring "Kurunmi," a stage play authored by Ola Rotimi.

Oluseyi Oyefeso, the Executive Director of Retail Banking South Directorate, made this announcement during the performance of "Kurunmi" on Sunday at Terra Kulture in Lagos.

Following the play, Oyefeso expressed, “This production is truly captivating, as it narrates the cultural heritage of our people for future generations. Our motivation for this initiative is to ensure the preservation of Nigeria's culture. If we fail to document and share our stories, we risk losing our history. The bank is dedicated to supporting the arts in capturing this narrative for the youth.”

He further noted, “The cast and crew involved in this production represent just a small portion of those benefiting from it. The arts sector engages a multitude of individuals. It is crucial for us in Nigeria to focus on how to effectively engage our youth.”

Oyefeso highlighted the impressive energy and choreography displayed, stating, “We must find ways to keep them positively engaged. This initiative aims to foster job creation, enhance our economy, and share our narratives. By supporting the creative industry, we contribute to its growth, which in turn strengthens our economy.”

Muyideen Oladapo, the director of the play, known as Lala, remarked, “This narrative reflects our people's story, and it is vital to share it, especially now that history is not emphasized in educational institutions. Sharing such stories will help the younger generation connect with their heritage.”

The current economic climate and the productivity levels within the creative sector are well understood. Theatre plays a significant role in enriching people's lives, reflecting our everyday experiences. However, it faces challenges and requires financial support, making FirstBank's contributions commendable.

Many individuals involved in this production are unemployed, yet their participation can stimulate economic growth. Observing the stage, it is evident that approximately 80 percent of the cast are young people. Therefore, FirstBank's support for youth engagement in theatre is a positive initiative. We express our gratitude to FirstBank and hope they continue their efforts in this area.

The play was graced by the presence of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Gboyega Akosile, the Executive Director of the production and Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the governor, emphasized the show's aim to preserve cultural heritage and history for future generations.

"Our mission is to promote our culture through the arts, as we have noticed a decline in artistic expression. During our school days, we formed a group with the intention of making a difference. For many of us, it has shifted from merely seeking sustenance to focusing on our contributions and envisioning a better future for those who will follow," he remarked.

The play, titled "Kurunmi," was penned by Ola Rotimi and is set in the Yoruba kingdom of Oyo. It narrates the story of Kurunmi, a military leader and general grappling with both internal conflicts and external threats from imperial forces.

Known for his military skills, Kurunmi becomes a pivotal character in this narrative, delving into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the tension between tradition and progress.

Produced by Stage Crafts Studios and Film Production Limited, a company dedicated to merging theatre and film, the play was directed by Muyideen Oladipupo "Lala" and featured a talented cast, including actors Olawale Lampejo and Tunji Sotimirin.

Throughout the years, the bank has been instrumental in facilitating private investment in infrastructure development within the Nigerian economy, actively participating in the Federal Government’s privatization and commercialization initiatives.

With its extensive global presence, FirstBank offers potential investors seeking to tap into the abundant business opportunities in Nigeria a reputable, world-class brand and a reliable financial partner.
