Dubois, who successfully defended his IBF heavyweight title, knocked Joshua down four times before concluding the match just 59 seconds into the fifth round, achieving a remarkable victory. Joshua entered the contest as the favorite, particularly after a series of four consecutive wins following two losses to Oleksandr Usyk.
Earlier this year, he also secured a victory over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, reinforcing his position as a leading contender in the heavyweight ranks. However, the defeat to Dubois has prompted the 34-year-old to contemplate his future in boxing.
In a discussion on DAZN, Hearn provided insight into Joshua's current mindset. “It’s still quite fresh, only three weeks ago. He’s devastated by the defeat,” he remarked.
“Daniel’s enjoying his time in Brazil as the new champion, and it’s well deserved. There’s a timeframe within AJ’s contract for him to make a decision, and while that period isn’t over yet, he’s deeply considering his options. He’s taking time to rest and determine his next steps.”
Hearn also noted that conversations regarding a potential rematch are in progress, suggesting that Joshua is inclined towards facing Dubois again despite the prevailing uncertainties. “When you start thinking about it, there’s no bad decision,” Hearn stated to Sky Sports.
“He aims to reclaim the world heavyweight title, which might involve a rematch with Dubois instead of fighting Deontay Wilder or waiting for Tyson Fury. Ultimately, if it’s up to AJ, which it will be, I believe it will be challenging to dissuade him from pursuing the rematch.”
Veteran heavyweight Derek Chisora has shared his thoughts on Anthony Joshua's current predicament, providing some candid advice.
“He needs to pursue the rematch immediately,” Chisora stated on ‘The Stomping Ground.’ “I want to acknowledge Daniel Dubois, the new champion, but Joshua should seize this opportunity. What other options does he have? Is he planning to fight Deontay Wilder and then return to face Dubois? No, he should go for the rematch now.”
Although there is no formal rematch clause in place, reports suggest that Joshua has one more bout remaining under his Riyadh Season agreement. Both Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, and Dubois are keen on facilitating the rematch.
