The event, titled “Medical Ethics and the Delivery of Quality Care,” brought together healthcare professionals and stakeholders to discuss ways to improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Dr. Korie noted that the webinar acts as a consistent platform for SUNU Health and its partners to review best practices and collaborative methods aimed at ensuring superior care for patients.
He emphasized the necessity of balancing affordability with quality, particularly given Nigeria’s economic difficulties, and highlighted that upholding ethical standards in healthcare is essential for achieving this equilibrium.
“In light of the current economic situation, it is vital to address medical ethics and its influence on care delivery,” Dr. Korie stated. “This conversation is pertinent not only for healthcare providers but also for patients, as ethics impact both parties involved.”
Reverend Father Udochukwu Ugorji, SJ., the guest speaker for the event, spoke about the increasing awareness among patients regarding their rights, which has resulted in a rise in litigation within the healthcare industry. He emphasized that medical professionals need to be well-versed not only in their specific fields but also in ethical and legal responsibilities to reduce risks.
“A medical practitioner must be proficient in both clinical skills and an understanding of professional duties,” Ugorji remarked. “Awareness of the legal dimensions of practice and the need for defensive medicine is essential. Practitioners should also contemplate acquiring liability insurance as a precaution.”
Ugorji recommended the formation of Hospital Ethics Committees, the initiation of Ethics Rounds, and the education of patients regarding their rights. Additionally, he advocated for the adoption of policies such as the Patients and Physician Bill to promote a culture of integrity and accountability in clinical settings.
