The Nigerian Optometric Association has urged the government to mandate that schools require eye test reports as part of their admission criteria.

During a walk held in Abuja to mark the 2024 World Sight Day, the association emphasized that early identification of vision issues is essential for ensuring that children receive prompt treatment, thereby preventing complications that could affect their academic and social growth.

World Sight Day is observed worldwide to promote awareness of eye health and combat preventable blindness.

In recognition of this day, the Optometry Association in the Federal Capital Territory organized a road walk, where participants underscored the necessity for Nigerians to prioritize their eye health.

At the event, representatives from the association highlighted the significance of regular eye examinations, particularly for children, to facilitate early detection and treatment of vision problems.

Additionally, the group provided free eye screenings for students at Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja. Numerous students underwent testing, and those requiring corrective measures received appropriate guidance on subsequent steps.

The association reiterated its call for the government to enforce the inclusion of eye test reports in school admission processes.

This initiative aims to identify vision issues early, ensuring that children receive timely treatment to prevent complications that could impede their academic and social development.

This appeal aligns with this year’s eye health awareness theme, ‘Love Your Eyes Kids,’ which stresses the importance of nurturing children’s eye health from an early age.
