Amazon Web Services (AWS), the computing division of Amazon, announced on Thursday its intention to invest 1.2 billion euros (approximately $1.3 billion) in Italy over the next five years to further enhance its data center operations in the country.

This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to strengthen its cloud services in Europe, following the launch of its inaugural cloud region in Italy in 2020, with a commitment to invest a total of 2 billion euros by 2029.

According to the company, this investment is expected to create up to 5,500 jobs throughout the AWS data center supply chain by 2029. The job opportunities will span various sectors, including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other roles within the local economy.

In May, Reuters reported that AWS was in discussions with the Italian government regarding a significant investment to expand its operations in the country.

The unit serves notable clients in Italy, including luxury automobile manufacturer Ferrari and insurance company Assicurazioni Generali, as indicated on its website.

Additionally, AWS plans to enhance its data center facilities in Milan, as reported by the Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore on Thursday.

Earlier in May, AWS announced a substantial investment of 15.7 billion euros in data centers located in Spain's northeastern Aragon region, and it also outlined plans to invest 7.8 billion euros in Germany by 2040.
