Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who overcame a controversy regarding her gender eligibility to secure Olympic gold, is pursuing legal action concerning media reports about purportedly leaked medical records, as announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday.

Recent reports from France have alleged that Khelif, 25, possesses XY chromosomes, typically associated with males. The gender debate intensified during the Paris Games in August when Khelif triumphed over Angela Carini in just 46 seconds during her opening match, leading to Carini being visibly upset and withdrawing from the competition due to a severe injury.

This situation has sparked widespread commentary from various public figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and author JK Rowling.

The IOC stated, “We understand that Imane Khelif has taken legal action against individuals who commented on her situation during the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and is also preparing a lawsuit in response to the latest reporting.” They further noted that they would refrain from commenting while legal proceedings are underway or regarding media reports about unverified documents of uncertain origin.

The IOC emphasized that Khelif has participated in the women’s category in international competitions for several years, including the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and various events sanctioned by the International Boxing Association (IBA). They expressed their dismay at the abuse Khelif is currently facing.

Upon her return to Algeria after her Olympic victory, Khelif was greeted with a hero’s welcome and has already lodged a complaint in France regarding online harassment.
