The star of 'Gladiator II' has announced that he will appear in director Ryan Coogler's upcoming 'Black Panther 3'. During an interview on Australia’s Today show, Washington confirmed that Coogler is developing a role for him in this highly anticipated sequel, providing the first official indication that a third installment is in the works.
However, it is important to note that Marvel Studios has not yet made any announcements regarding the project or its potential release date.
In addition, Washington revealed his plans for retirement from Hollywood, expressing that he is being discerning with his final projects. “At this stage in my career, I’m focused on collaborating with the best,” he stated, adding, “I’m uncertain how many more films I will undertake, likely not many. I want to explore new opportunities.”
The seasoned actor also shared his exciting upcoming projects, which include a return to the role of Othello and a portrayal of Hannibal. He mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmaker Steve McQueen about another venture before he steps into the Black Panther franchise. “After Black Panther, I plan to revisit Othello, then take on King Lear, and after that, I will retire,” he concluded.
Washington's involvement in the next Black Panther film represents a significant moment, as the late Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the original 'Black Panther', once remarked, "There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington."
In a heartfelt tribute during the 47th American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony in 2019, honoring Washington, Boseman expressed, "My entire cast, that generation stands on your shoulders, the daily battles won, the countless sacrifices you made for the culture on film sets throughout your career, the principles you upheld along the way have laid the groundwork for us to follow." Boseman, who portrayed King T'Challa, tragically passed away after a private battle with illness.
