The Federal Government has introduced Nigeria’s National Volunteer Database alongside the framework for the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism.

This database, established through the Nigerian National Volunteer Service under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in partnership with Natview Technology, seeks to position volunteerism as a key component of Nigeria’s sustainable development initiatives.

As stated by Olubunmi Olorunpomi, Head of Communications at Natview Technology, the initiative was officially launched on Wednesday in Abuja, under the theme “Launching the National Volunteer Database in Nigeria and the Blueprint of the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism.”

This effort reflects the government’s ongoing dedication to fostering civic participation among citizens, with a focus on sustainable national development.

George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, represented by Director Ifiok Abia, emphasized that the National Volunteer Database offers Nigerians organized and straightforward access to volunteer opportunities that align with the nation’s socio-economic, environmental, and societal objectives.

He remarked, “The blueprint for the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism, which received approval from the Federal Executive Council in December 2020, provides a comprehensive framework for structured and inclusive volunteerism throughout the country. Managed by the NNVS, the policy emphasizes vital sectors such as health, education, the environment, and social services.”

By establishing an inclusive volunteer framework, the government aims to “empower individuals, organizations, and communities to engage in collective action” to advance the nation’s growth and development, Abia added.

The SGF further emphasized that the National Volunteer Database aims to enhance volunteer engagement by making it more accessible, efficient, and impactful for both individuals and organizations.

“It features a User-Friendly Volunteer Registration and Matching system, enabling citizens to sign up, outline their skills, and connect with volunteer opportunities that align with their interests and expertise.”

Abia noted that the platform includes a “Community Project Listings” feature, allowing NGOs, community organizations, and government entities to share comprehensive descriptions of available volunteer opportunities.

“This ensures that prospective volunteers are well-informed about the project requirements and expectations prior to making a commitment.”

Additionally, the database integrates “Built-In Communication and Impact Assessment” tools, which promote direct communication between volunteers and project coordinators. This system also features feedback mechanisms to assess project outcomes, fostering a culture of accountability and ongoing improvement within volunteer initiatives.

He added, “The government’s goal with this platform is to nurture a culture where all Nigerians can engage in nation-building, promoting an atmosphere of civic responsibility and active citizenship.

“This initiative is anticipated to strengthen community ties across various regions and backgrounds, allowing individuals from different areas of Nigeria to collaborate in addressing diverse socio-economic and environmental challenges.”

Natview Technology’s CEO, Nuradeen Maidoki, highlighted the importance of the platform by stating, “Many young Nigerians are eager to volunteer but lack direction on how to start. We are thrilled about the NNVS web platform, as it will offer a comprehensive database of volunteer opportunities for youth.”

Maidoki pointed out that this database has the potential to direct young individuals toward fulfilling volunteer positions, emphasizing the platform's role as a crucial resource for those looking to engage in volunteer work throughout the nation.

He further remarked, “The Nigerian government is making a significant move toward fostering a more interconnected, responsible, and resilient society by promoting volunteerism through this innovative digital platform and policy framework. This collaborative initiative encourages all citizens to play an active role in national development, thereby enhancing unity and reinforcing community ties across Nigeria.”
