According to data released by the Nigerian box office, over 935,000 tickets have been sold, reflecting a 125% increase in revenue and a 46% rise in ticket sales compared to the same timeframe last year.
The impressive production quality and compelling storytelling in Nollywood films have been identified as significant contributors to the industry's record-breaking box office success in 2024.
With films consistently earning over N100 million since the start of the year, Nollywood is poised for its most prosperous year to date.
Notable films such as Jagun Jagun, Queen Lateefah, Ajakaju, and Farmer’s Bride have emerged as top performers this year, with several achieving over N400 million in earnings shortly after their release. This success highlights Nollywood's growing ability to produce blockbusters that appeal to a wide range of audiences.
Films like All’s Fair In Love, which earned N136 million, and Lakatabu, which exceeded N200 million, illustrate the rising demand for high-caliber productions.
Other successful titles, including Ajakaju, Ajosepo, and Farmer’s Bride, have also crossed the N200 million threshold, while Queen Lateefah continues to perform impressively with N336 million in box office revenue to date.
As December approaches—a peak season for Nigerian cinemas—the industry is preparing for what could be an even more successful conclusion to the year.
Last December set a remarkable standard with the success of films such as Battle on Buka Street and Ijakumo: Born Again Stripper. However, as 2024 unfolds with unprecedented figures, industry experts are optimistic about exceeding last year's holiday season box office results.
With total revenues from all films already surpassing N8 billion, Nollywood is on track to achieve a record year-end total ranging from N11 to N12 billion. Anticipated major releases and increased foot traffic during the holiday season are expected to further boost revenue.
This optimistic outlook is supported by highly awaited December releases from renowned directors like Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham, whose holiday hits have historically contributed to substantial box office increases.
Nollywood's exceptional performance this year not only emphasizes the industry's potential for revenue expansion but also highlights its significance in shaping Nigeria's cultural and economic landscape. As the sector continues to innovate and draw in investments, the future appears exceptionally promising for Africa's largest film industry.
