Leicester City announced Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager on Friday, shortly after his exit from Manchester United. The Dutchman departed United earlier this month following a brief tenure as interim manager, having previously served as an assistant to Erik ten Hag.

Leicester made the decision to part ways with Steve Cooper on Sunday after he managed the team for just 12 Premier League matches, leaving the Foxes in 16th place, only one point clear of the relegation zone.

In a club statement, Van Nistelrooy expressed his pride and excitement, stating, “Everyone I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic. The club's recent history is remarkable, and I am eager to start, meet everyone, and contribute my utmost to the football club.”

Leicester made headlines by winning the Premier League in the 2015/16 season and secured their first FA Cup five years later. However, they faced relegation from the top division two years ago but managed to return at the first attempt under current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

During his brief stint as United's caretaker manager, Van Nistelrooy achieved two of his three victories against Leicester in both the League Cup and Premier League.

The 48-year-old brings managerial experience from his time at PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season. He will officially start his role on Sunday, while a caretaker team led by Ben Dawson will oversee Saturday's match against Brentford, although Van Nistelrooy plans to attend.

A renowned goalscorer, Van Nistelrooy had a distinguished playing career, particularly with PSV, Manchester United, and Real Madrid. Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha remarked, “Ruud’s experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will undoubtedly add significant value to our club, and we look forward to supporting him in achieving success for our fans and the organization.”
