Deployment of autonomous vehicles in Miami is planned for early 2024, with a projected launch of rider services via the Waymo One app by 2026.
This expansion is particularly timely as Waymo faces heightened scrutiny from safety regulators due to several incidents related to its autonomous driving technology.
The competitive landscape in the autonomous vehicle sector, especially with rivals like General Motors' Cruise, Amazon's Zoox, and the emerging Tesla, poses a considerable challenge for Waymo in its quest to secure and sustain market leadership in the fast-changing self-driving technology arena.
Miami will join the ranks of Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin as cities where Waymo operates.
Additionally, Waymo has formed a partnership with vehicle financing company Moove, which will oversee the management of Waymo's fleet operations, facilities, and charging infrastructure, beginning in Phoenix, Arizona.
Last month, the company made its ride-hailing services available to all users in Los Angeles, and in October, it successfully completed a $5.6 billion funding round led by Alphabet.
