Amazon announced Thursday the successful completion of an initial drone delivery test in Italy, signifying the e-commerce giant's intention to launch this service in its first European market. The test occurred Wednesday in San Salvo, Abruzzo.

The company stated that it is actively collaborating with Italian authorities to fulfill all necessary requirements for launching the service next year.

Previously, Amazon expressed its ambition to begin drone operations in Italy and the UK by late 2024.

In August, the UK's aviation regulator revealed that it had chosen six projects, including one from Amazon, to explore the use of drones for deliveries, infrastructure inspections, and emergency services.

The Prime Air drone delivery service, which was initially launched in December 2022, is currently operational in select locations in Texas and Arizona, with plans for gradual expansion, according to a company spokesperson.

"Amazon delivery drones took to the skies in Italy for the first time on December 4, 2024. The test flight utilized the new MK-30 drone, an advanced automated system that employs Amazon's leading computer vision technology," the company stated regarding the test in Italy.

"This technology enables drones to navigate safely around obstacles, ensuring the safety of individuals, animals, and property, while also maintaining a safe distance from other aircraft in the operational area."
