Nigerian artist David Adeleke, widely recognized as Davido, has discussed his significant impact on the afrobeats genre. The artist behind the hit "Skelewu" asserted that it is impossible to mention afrobeats without including his name.

He made these remarks in the latest edition of TheBeatJuice magazine, stating, "Afrobeats can’t be brought up without my name. Impossible."

Although Davido is often considered one of the top three afrobeats artists alongside Wizkid and Burna Boy, he has previously expressed reservations about the genre, similar to his peers.

In a recent episode of the Business Untitled Podcast, he criticized the tendency to categorize all African musicians under the afrobeats label, regardless of their diverse styles. He prefers to identify as an "afro-fusion" artist but acknowledged that he does not take offense at being labeled afrobeats due to its significance in promoting African music.

“I don’t get offended when we’ve been categorised as Afrobeats. I mean, we need a genre. It could be R&B or Afropop.

“I call my music Afrofusion but I’m not big on ‘O put Afrofusion on my song.’ I know how long it took for African music to become mainstream,” he stated.
