With a career that spans over twenty years, Funke Akindele has utilized her influence to highlight social issues, foster positive change, and support important causes.
In her role as UNAIDS’ National Goodwill Ambassador, Funke is anticipated to play a vital part in initiatives aimed at eradicating vertical transmission of HIV, combating HIV-related stigma and discrimination, and enhancing HIV prevention efforts throughout Nigeria.
UNAIDS reports indicate that Nigeria has made considerable progress in the battle against HIV over the last twenty years. As of 2023, around 2 million individuals are living with HIV in the country, with an adult prevalence rate of 1.3% among those aged 15 to 49. In 2010, Nigeria saw approximately 130,000 new HIV infections, which decreased to about 75,000 by 2023, marking a reduction of roughly 55,000 cases, or a 42.3% decline over the 13-year span. Additionally, significant advancements have been made in treatment accessibility, with 1.6 million of the 2 million people living with HIV in Nigeria currently receiving treatment.
However, challenges remain, particularly in addressing stigma and discrimination and ensuring fair access to prevention and treatment services.
Funke Akindele’s appointment as National Goodwill Ambassador represents a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s fight against HIV.
The selection process for the National Goodwill Ambassador involved close collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), which has expressed gratitude for UNAIDS’ efforts in establishing this important partnership for Nigeria’s HIV response.
Her dedication and influence in driving social change will play a crucial role in galvanizing efforts for HIV prevention and ensuring that essential messages reach broader audiences nationwide.
