The Dangote Group emphasized the global demand for its petroleum products while expanding its polypropylene production to lessen Nigeria’s dependence on imported polypropylene, an essential material for packaging, textiles, and the automotive sector.
During their visit to the impressive facilities of both the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals and Dangote Fertilisers, the Japanese delegation praised the advanced technology showcased, affirming Nigeria’s position as a gateway to Africa.
Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), noted that while Nigeria is recognized as the gateway to Africa, the Dangote Refinery exemplifies the nation’s technological advancements. He highlighted that as the world’s largest single-train refinery, it represents a significant source of pride for Nigeria. JETRO serves as Japan’s governmental body for trade and investment.
“We had heard about the excellence of the Dangote Refinery through the media, but witnessing it firsthand has truly astonished us with its scale and magnificence. It illustrates that Nigeria’s population is not only growing but also advancing technologically. We are eager to collaborate with Nigerian enterprises, particularly the Dangote Refinery,” he stated.

Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, similarly lauded the Dangote Refinery's impressive scale and automation, characterizing it as a remarkable feat and a continental marvel. Having observed numerous independent refineries globally, including those in Vietnam and the Middle East, the magnitude of this single-investor project is truly exceptional; it is a privilege to witness this extraordinary accomplishment.
Tsuno expressed his company's intention to collaborate with the refinery in various sectors, such as polypropylene and other petroleum products.
Praising the ambassador-designate and his team, who referred to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as a marvel of contemporary technology, Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, elaborated that the facility represents the vision of Nigerian investor Aliko Dangote, designed and constructed by Nigerians, with the aim of serving the global market.
He highlighted the pride in having a Nigerian company not only design but also build the largest single-train refinery complex in the world.
Dangote Industries Limited served as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the refinery, integrating advanced technologies from around the globe to ensure the facility adheres to the highest standards.
Edwin assured the ambassador-designate and delegation of the company's commitment to collaborative partnerships, maintaining the highest standards of excellence.
He highlighted the company's extensive use of Japanese equipment in its refinery and fertilizer plant, emphasizing significant opportunities for collaboration given our ongoing pursuit of cutting-edge technology.
He cited the company's robotic cement plant laboratory as an example of our proactive approach to technological advancement, and noted the substantial potential for technological cooperation given Japan's reputation for innovation.Edwin emphasized that the Dangote Petrochemical project is poised to significantly enhance investment in downstream sectors, thereby generating considerable value, creating jobs, increasing tax revenues, minimizing foreign exchange outflows, and contributing positively to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He affirmed that the refinery's products comply with international standards and are already being exported worldwide.
“In recent weeks, we have shipped petrol to countries such as Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa, among others. Diesel has reached various global markets, and jet fuel is being extensively exported to Europe. Our products are establishing a strong international presence,” he noted.
He also mentioned that by utilizing Africa’s abundant crude oil resources to produce refined products domestically, the Dangote Group aims to foster a sustainable cycle of industrial growth, job creation, and economic advancement.
