British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged for the prompt enactment of the Football Governance Bill into English law in light of the renewed threat posed by a potential breakaway European Super League.

Reports indicate that promoters A22 have reached out to UEFA and FIFA, the governing bodies for European and global football, to gain official recognition for a new competition named the Unify League.

A22's proposal is said to encompass four leagues with a total of 96 participating teams. The previous Super League initiative, which involved 12 European clubs, including six prominent Premier League teams, faced significant backlash from fans and football authorities in 2021, resulting in its rapid dissolution.

As a dedicated Arsenal supporter, Starmer, 62, is determined to prevent any further involvement from Premier League clubs in a potential split by advocating for the swift passage of the Football Governance Bill. This legislation aims to establish an independent football regulator overseeing the top five tiers of men's football in England.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister's official spokesman reiterated Starmer's commitment, stating, "You have heard him assert that under his leadership, there will be no Super League-style breakaway from English football."

The spokesperson stated that the strengthened Football Governance Bill grants the regulator the authority to prohibit English clubs from participating in future breakaway leagues, considering factors such as sustainability, heritage, and equitable practices.

The spokesperson concluded by expressing a desire for the Bill's expeditious passage through Parliament, enabling the regulator to prevent such breakaway competitions and implement other crucial reforms for the English football pyramid.
