This info was shared on the NCAA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, along with documents outlining the compensation process.
The documents, signed by Michael Achimugu, the NCAA's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, included key details like compensation dates, flight numbers, routes, flight dates, passenger counts, discounts given, and the reasons behind the compensations.
A look at the records showed that the affected flights were from November 1 to November 30, 2024, with compensation rates varying from 25% to 65%, based on the type of disruption.
The reasons for compensation were diverse, including operational issues, downgrades from business class, and technical problems with the airline's planes. Other disruptions included delayed flights due to late arrivals of aircraft, baggage mishandling, and the temporary closure of Warri Airport.
These challenges had a significant effect on passengers, leading the airline to offer compensation as per aviation regulations.
Besides Air Peace’s compensations, the NCAA also provided information about compensation from Aero Contractors in 2024. The documents indicated that Aero Contractors issued compensation 20 times between February and September 2024.
Compensation packages included different types of tickets: two business class round-trip tickets for one situation, a business class round-trip ticket for another (which the passenger turned down in favor of a refund of N585,000), and two economy class round-trip tickets for yet another case.
Other instances featured one economy class round-trip ticket, another return economy class ticket, and an offer of N1,421,390 from the airline’s insurance, which was declined and is now in litigation. The compensation scenarios also had various mixes of economy and business class round-trip tickets, with several offers of economy class tickets.
Earlier in January, Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), shared important insights about passenger rights and airline duties. He pointed out that if baggage goes missing on domestic flights, the airline has a week to find and return it.
He also mentioned that if a flight is delayed or canceled due to weather, the airline isn’t obligated to provide compensation. Plus, he stressed the need for passengers to arrive early for their flights. If someone arrives late or doesn’t show up, their eligibility for a refund depends on the type of ticket they bought. Non-refundable tickets won’t be refunded and will be processed strictly according to the ticket’s terms and conditions, with no exceptions.
