Dangote asserts that a $700 million investment in sugar production will eliminate Nigeria's reliance on sugar imports.
Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, has announced that the company is dedicated to helping Nigeria stop importing raw sugar by ramping up its efforts in the Sugar Backward Integration initiative.
He mentioned that Dangote Group has invested over $700 million in acquiring land, machinery, infrastructure, workforce, and other key areas to enhance local sugar production.
Dangote made these remarks on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the ‘Dangote Special Day’ at the 14th Gateway International Trade Fair.
Tunde Mabogunje, Dangote Cement's Lagos/Ogun Regional Director, stated that Dangote Sugar, a leading brand, has significantly impacted Nigeria's sugar industry.
He emphasized the company's commitment to eliminating raw sugar imports through aggressive implementation of its Sugar Backward Integration program, noting a $700 million investment in land acquisition, equipment, infrastructure, personnel, community relations, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and other key initiatives.
Furthermore, he highlighted investments in the agricultural sector to bolster national food security, with resultant products soon to be available commercially.
Regarding the trade fair, he stated that their objectives included expanding awareness of innovative products, generating sales, attracting potential buyers, enhancing brand image, and opening new markets, ultimately leading to job creation and broader economic growth. He expressed confidence that the enduring partnership with OGUNCCIMA would benefit both organizations, as well as Nigeria and the African economy.
In related news, Oludaisi Elemide, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, praised Dangote Group for its various initiatives and encouraged the company to enhance its environmental sustainability efforts.
