After a lot of discussions, this decision is a big step toward making the industry more sustainable in the long run. It will help attract the investments needed to improve service quality for users all over the country.
The telecom sector had been pushing for a significant tariff review to deal with rising operational costs caused by inflation, soaring energy prices, and a currency devaluation of over 300%.
Although the industry initially sought a bigger increase of up to 100%, the NCC's approval of a 50% adjustment strikes a good balance between keeping services affordable for consumers and addressing the sustainability needs of the industry.
9mobile’s CEO, Obafemi Banigbe, pointed out that this tariff adjustment will allow telecom operators to invest in essential infrastructure upgrades and expand capacity, which have been on hold due to financial issues.
“This tariff adjustment is timely and essential,” Banigbe stated, adding, “It allows operators to fulfill obligations and capital commitments necessary for future growth. Without this, the industry risked a decline in service quality due to insufficient funding. With this change, we are better positioned to drive innovation, growth, and enhanced connectivity for Nigerians.”
Banigbe pointed out that the recent increase is a significant boost for 9mobile’s ongoing transformation efforts. This includes upgrading network infrastructure, broadening coverage, and enhancing digital platforms for quicker and more dependable connectivity. “This decision enables us to replace outdated equipment, expand our network to underserved areas, and enhance the overall customer experience,” he mentioned.
The tariff change is a strategic step to address the funding gap worsened by rising operational costs, many of which are in foreign currency.
These issues have put pressure on telecom operators, limiting their ability to reinvest and increasing their debt levels.
The new pricing model aims to create financial stability while ensuring high-quality services for millions of Nigerians.
Telecom operators have long pushed for a pricing structure that reflects the market, emphasizing its importance for the industry's sustainability. The approval of this tariff adjustment allows operators to balance affordability with the need to cover rising costs and maintain service quality.
Reiterating 9mobile’s commitment to Nigeria, Banigbe said: “Our focus remains on investing in infrastructure that delivers reliable and innovative services to our esteemed customers. We are dedicated to empowering Nigerians through connectivity, expanding access, and supporting the nation’s vision of becoming a leading digital economy in Africa.”
With this change, 9mobile is set to further enhance its reputation as a customer-focused, quality-driven service provider, ensuring that Nigerians stay connected and empowered in a more digital world.
