The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has firmly declined requests from airlines seeking waivers for fines imposed due to various regulatory violations.

Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, emphasized that the penalties will be enforced to uphold compliance with industry standards.

“Many airlines have requested waivers, but we have refused to grant them,” Achimugu stated. “However, Royal Air Maroc has approached us with a commitment to improve their service quality for Nigerian passengers.”

He added, “Nearly all the airlines have written to us, promising to do better in exchange for waivers. While we believe they can improve, we have declined these requests. The purpose of these sanctions is not merely to punish but to ensure that airlines enhance their services for Nigerian travelers.”

Reductions Possible for Compliant Airlines

Achimugu clarified the NCAA’s position, noting that while outright waivers are off the table, the authority is open to reducing penalties for airlines that demonstrate full compliance and resolve all outstanding issues.

“We have rejected outright waivers, but we are willing to lower some of the fines if airlines can prove they have addressed every issue listed in the sanctions,” he explained.

In December 2024, the NCAA announced sanctions against several airlines, including Air Peace and Ethiopian Airlines, for regulatory breaches. On February 11, the authority warned that additional carriers violating consumer protection regulations would also face penalties.
