The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has scheduled a new mop-up examination for candidates who missed the recently concluded 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This move aims to accommodate the over 5.6% of candidates who were unable to sit for the main exam, regardless of their reasons for absence.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. He emphasized the importance of providing every eligible candidate with an opportunity, stating, “This time, we are creating a new mop-up. Even those who missed the earlier exam due to absence will get another opportunity.” He clarified that such provisions are standard in robust examination systems, provided there's no abuse of the process.

Understanding the UTME's Purpose

Professor Oloyede took the opportunity to reiterate the core function of the UTME. He stressed that the examination is a placement test, designed to rank candidates for limited admission slots in tertiary institutions, rather than a measure of intelligence or academic potential. "Its purpose is to rank candidates for limited admission slots, not to test how smart someone is,” he explained.

Addressing Criticisms and Upholding Fairness

The Registrar also addressed various criticisms and conspiracy theories surrounding the examination process, particularly dismissing claims of ethnic bias or administrative incompetence. Taking a stance of leadership, Oloyede stated, “I take responsibility, not because I failed, but because that’s leadership.” He expressed surprise at the ethnic lens through which some viewed the issues, urging a move beyond such profiling.

Professor Oloyede concluded by commending both candidates and staff for their resilience in navigating logistical challenges during the main examination. He acknowledged the difficult circumstances, stating, “We had limited space. We knew if we wasted more time grieving the challenges, students would lose their opportunity.”

The special mop-up examination date will be announced soon. JAMB remains committed to ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the admissions process.
