South African singer Tyla added another milestone to her fast-rising career on Sunday night, winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held in New York.

Her chart-topping single “Push 2 Start” earned her the honour, edging out stiff competition from Nigerian stars including Burna Boy and Ayra Starr. The award marks a major victory for the 23-year-old, who has been one of Africa’s breakout voices on the global stage.

Although Tyla secured the top Afrobeats prize, she missed out in the Best Choreography category, where she had also been nominated.

For Nigerian nominees, the night ended in disappointment. Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and other contenders left empty-handed, despite their strong international presence and fan backing.

American pop icon Lady Gaga emerged the biggest winner of the evening, walking away with four trophies including Artist of the Year, Best Direction, Best Collaboration, and Best Art Direction.

The 2025 VMAs once again highlighted Afrobeats’ growing influence on the global music scene, even as debates continue over how the category reflects the diversity of African soundscapes. Tyla’s win, in particular, underscores South Africa’s deepening footprint in a space largely dominated by Nigerian talent in recent years.
