In a move set to accelerate digital learning and innovation across the continent, American technology giant Google has announced a new initiative offering its premium Google AI Pro subscription free to university students across Africa for 12 months.

The program targets eligible students aged 18 and above in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, giving them access to Google’s most advanced artificial intelligence tools, including the powerful Gemini 2.5 Pro model. The initiative is aimed at fostering AI literacy, research, and creativity among young Africans in higher education.

According to Google, the offer will help students integrate generative AI tools into their studies and research, preparing them for a global job market that increasingly values AI proficiency.

Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to expanding access to technology and nurturing local talent.

“By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future,” Okosi said.

He added that the free AI Pro access reflects Google’s mission to democratize technology and ensure African students can compete and lead on a global scale.

The initiative comes amid growing emphasis on AI adoption in Africa’s education and innovation ecosystems, with universities and governments seeking to integrate digital tools into academic and professional training.

Through this program, Google aims to build a new generation of African leaders and innovators equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an AI-driven world.
