Veteran Nollywood actress Ireti Doyle has opened up about her decision to retreat from social media, citing the increasingly toxic atmosphere online as detrimental to her peace and wellbeing.

The 58-year-old actress, who had been noticeably absent from the digital space in recent months, made a rare appearance on Instagram to address her followers and reflect on her time away.

“I used to wonder what I’d do with myself once I became an ‘empty nester’… now I know,” Doyle wrote. “Had to disappear again. The streets of social media (nay, the world in general) is becoming too toxic for my quiet soul. How have you been? I hope you’re protecting yourself?”

Her candid post resonated with many fans who empathized with her concerns about the mental strain of constant online exposure, particularly in an era of heightened scrutiny and digital noise.

Born on May 3, 1967, in Ondo State, Doyle spent much of her early life in Boston, United States, before returning to Nigeria, where she earned a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos.

Her career began in television as a producer and presenter, notably creating and hosting the long-running lifestyle show “Oge with Iretiola” for ten years. She also anchored other programs, including “Morning Ride” on Silverbird Television.

Doyle transitioned seamlessly into acting in the late 1990s and has since become one of Nollywood’s most respected performers, with standout roles in films such as “Sitanda” (2006), “Across the Niger” (2009), and “Torn” (2013). Her stellar work has earned her several accolades, including a Best Supporting Actress award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Despite personal and professional highs and lows — including her divorce from broadcaster Patrick Doyle — the actress continues to inspire many with her authenticity and poise.

Her latest post underscores a growing sentiment among public figures choosing intentional digital minimalism to preserve their peace in an increasingly chaotic online environment.
