At least 250,750 children have been immunised in Kaugama Local Government Area of Jigawa State during a large-scale integrated vaccination campaign aimed at protecting children against major preventable diseases.

The exercise, which targeted Measles Rubella, Polio, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen routine immunisation and safeguard child health in the state.

Local Immunisation Officer, Muhammad Tasiu, revealed that 99,213 children aged between nine months and 14 years were vaccinated against Measles Rubella, surpassing expectations with 105 percent coverage across the council area.

He added that 74,401 children under 23 months received the Novel Oral Polio Vaccine (nOPV2), while an equal number of children under five were given the Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV)—both achieving 102 percent coverage. In addition, 2,735 girls aged nine years were immunised with the HPV vaccine to protect against cervical cancer.

Health Promotion Officer, Umar Auyo, commended community leaders and development partners for their cooperation, noting that grassroots mobilisation played a major role in the success of the campaign.

Similarly, Primary Health Care Coordinator, Audu Aliyu Karkarna, praised the Chairman of Kaugama Local Government, Usman Masaki Dansule, for his sustained support to the health sector. He highlighted the renovation of the Primary Health Care office in Kaugama, which has provided a more conducive environment for health workers.

The campaign aligns with Jigawa State’s commitment to expand immunisation coverage and ensure that every child is protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, in line with Nigeria’s national public health targets and global immunisation goals.
