The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the African Nations League, a new annual competition aimed at providing Africa’s top national teams with a consistent, high-quality platform for competition and player development.

CAF said the tournament will feature senior national teams and guarantee regular, world-class fixtures that showcase the continent’s best footballing talent. The initiative is designed to increase exposure for African players while strengthening the overall competitiveness of national teams.

Announcing the launch on its official X account on Monday, CAF stated: “CAF launches exciting new African Nations League and guarantees that CAF will host, every year, a world-class Senior National Team Competition in which the best African players will participate.”

According to CAF, the African Nations League will play a key role in fostering competitive matches across the continent, supporting player growth, and deepening fan engagement. By staging the competition annually, the football body aims to ensure steady access to top-level football for players, coaches, and supporters alike.

The launch underscores CAF’s broader commitment to elevating African football on the global stage and creating more sustainable opportunities for national teams and football associations.

The new competition also comes amid broader changes to CAF’s tournament calendar. Earlier, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that the Africa Cup of Nations will move to a four-year cycle after an edition scheduled for 2028, marking a significant shift from the tournament’s long-standing biennial format.

Together, the introduction of the African Nations League and the restructuring of AFCON signal a strategic effort by CAF to modernise African football, balance international calendars, and enhance the quality and visibility of competitions across the continent.
