With preparations intensifying ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Argentina’s buildup has been disrupted by a major injury setback involving one of its experienced defenders. Juan Foyth, a member of the squad that lifted the trophy in 2022, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury, casting doubt over his availability for the tournament.

The injury occurred during Villarreal’s high-profile La Liga clash against Real Madrid on Saturday, a match the Spanish giants won 2–0 away from home. While the result favored Los Blancos, the most worrying moment came in the 21st minute when Foyth collapsed inside his own penalty area. The Argentine defender was visibly distressed and unable to put weight on his left foot, forcing Villarreal’s medical staff to substitute him early.

Villarreal confirmed the severity of the injury on Sunday. In an official statement, the club revealed that medical tests had confirmed a rupture of Foyth’s Achilles tendon sustained during the match against Real Madrid. The club added that further details regarding the required surgical procedure would be communicated in due course, offering words of support to their captain as he begins his recovery. The injury reportedly occurred as Foyth attempted to track Jude Bellingham, during which his left foot appeared to hyperextend.

Although no specific recovery timeline has been released, Achilles tendon ruptures typically require between four and six months of rehabilitation. Given that the World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 11, this timeline places Foyth’s chances of returning to full fitness for the tournament in serious doubt.

Villarreal head coach Marcelino described the loss as a significant blow, emphasizing Foyth’s leadership role within a relatively young defensive unit. He noted that the defender’s experience and presence were invaluable, adding that while the team must push forward, the disappointment is felt most keenly for the player himself. Prior to the injury, Foyth had made 18 appearances this season and had worn the captain’s armband in several Champions League fixtures.

At international level, Foyth has earned 22 caps for Argentina and was part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad during the successful 2022 World Cup campaign alongside Lionel Messi. While not always a guaranteed starter, he established himself as a trusted and versatile option, capable of operating as a central defender or as a fullback on either flank.

His tactical flexibility had been evident in Argentina’s most recent outing against Angola, where Scaloni experimented with a back three featuring Foyth alongside Cristian Romero and left back Nicolás Tagliafico. However, Scaloni’s preferred system remains a traditional back four, with Romero and Nicolás Otamendi continuing as the first-choice central defensive pairing that has underpinned Argentina’s strong showing at the top of the 2026 World Cup qualifying standings.

Foyth’s absence now raises important selection questions for the defending champions. Lisandro Martínez is only just returning to form at Manchester United after a lengthy recovery from an ACL injury, limiting Argentina’s experienced options at center back. During the 2022 World Cup, Scaloni selected five central defenders, including the versatile Foyth, and a similar approach is expected again.

With two remaining defensive roster spots likely up for grabs, competition is expected among Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi, Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi, and River Plate’s Lautaro Rivero. As Argentina continues its preparations, Foyth’s injury represents both a personal setback for the defender and a strategic challenge for Scaloni as he looks to finalize his defensive options ahead of the global tournament.
