The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Aliyu Isa Aliyu, made this known in a message delivered at the official flag-off of the exercise in Bunkure. He announced that the vaccination campaign would span all 44 local government areas of Kano State as part of a broader strategy to control and ultimately eliminate the highly contagious livestock disease.
Represented at the event by Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Usman of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, the commissioner said the creation of the Livestock Development Ministry by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening livestock production, enhancing animal health, and safeguarding public health.
Tackling a Major Livestock Threat
CBPP is a severe bacterial disease that primarily affects cattle, weakening infected animals and significantly reducing productivity. According to the commissioner, the disease can lead to weight loss, decreased milk output, poor meat quality, and in extreme cases, death—posing serious economic risks to livestock farmers and threatening food security.
By targeting 1.5 million cattle, the state government aims not only to curb transmission but also to protect the livelihoods of herders and traders whose incomes depend heavily on healthy livestock.
Call for Stakeholder Cooperation
The ministry has called on livestock owners, herders, and community leaders to fully cooperate with veterinary officials by ensuring their cattle are presented for vaccination. Officials stressed that collective action is critical to preventing the spread of CBPP, particularly in a state with a large and mobile cattle population.
The commissioner noted that proactive disease prevention programmes such as the annual CBPP vaccination drive are essential to sustaining Kano’s livestock sector and maintaining consumer confidence in animal products.
Ensuring Safe Meat Supply Ahead of Ramadan
Authorities also highlighted the importance of the campaign in guaranteeing the availability of safe and healthy livestock products, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches—a period when demand for quality meat typically increases.
The ministry reaffirmed its resolve to implement sustained animal health interventions, describing vaccination as a cornerstone of its strategy to build a resilient livestock industry, improve productivity, and contribute to broader food security goals in Kano State.
