The project, announced last October in collaboration with OpenAI and Oracle, is part of the Stargate initiative aimed at expanding the country’s AI capacity. The campus is expected to exceed 1 gigawatt in power, reflecting the scale of investment required to support next-generation artificial intelligence systems.
“Full construction has been underway since February, and we expect financing to be finalized shortly,” Related Digital said in a statement, highlighting the rapid pace of both development and fundraising.
Oracle, which is driving the technical development of the site, has confirmed that vertical construction of the campus is now underway. “We are proud of the rapid progress that’s been made in both financing and developing our data center in Saline Township, Michigan,” an Oracle spokesperson said, adding that construction is moving forward on schedule and according to plan.
Financing Structure
According to Bloomberg News, the financing is expected to consist of nearly $2 billion in equity from Blackstone, approximately half of what was initially under consideration. The remaining $14 billion will be led by Bank of America and was originally intended as a construction loan but is now expected to be structured as a bond offering. Bank of America declined to comment, and Blackstone did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The AI Infrastructure Race
Big Tech companies have poured billions into building AI infrastructure, driven by the global race to develop systems capable of human-level intelligence. The Saline Township campus is one of the largest projects in the U.S. aimed at supporting AI workloads, and its completion is expected to strengthen domestic capabilities in this increasingly strategic sector.
The collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital represents a convergence of cloud computing, data center engineering, and AI development expertise. The project’s scale—over 1 gigawatt of computing power—underscores the capital intensity of modern AI infrastructure and the importance of U.S.-based facilities in supporting both commercial and research applications.
With financing nearing completion and construction progressing on schedule, the Saline Township data center is poised to become a cornerstone of the nation’s AI ecosystem, reflecting the growing commitment of private capital to the technology race.
