Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has dismissed reports claiming that he stormed out of comedian Peller’s wedding in anger following a joke about the controversial debate over Wizkid and his late father, Fela Kuti.
The last son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti was at the centre of an online controversy after videos from the wedding ceremony circulated on social media, with claims that he left the event after one of the master of ceremonies made remarks about the widely discussed “Wizkid is bigger than Fela” debate.
In one of the viral clips, Seun was seen leaving the venue while saying, “We are in the wrong place,” a comment that fueled speculation that he was upset by the joke.
The incident generated reactions online, with one of the event’s MCs later accusing Seun of having anger issues over the situation.
However, Seun has now provided clarification, denying that he left the wedding out of anger.
The musician was confronted about the incident by Fuji singer Malaika at the Afrika Shrine in Lagos, where he explained that his departure was planned because he had another engagement to attend at the venue.
According to Seun, he remained at the wedding until the evening before leaving around 8:30 p.m. for an event scheduled at his father’s Shrine.
“I left the Peller’s wedding about 8:30 pm. I came to the Shrine. There’s an event at the Shrine and I have to be there. But bloggers were saying I left angrily. Was I supposed to be dancing when I was hurriedly leaving the place for another event?” Seun said.
The musician questioned the interpretation of his departure, suggesting that leaving an event due to another commitment should not automatically be viewed as a sign of anger.
The controversy is linked to the heated online exchange between Seun Kuti and Afrobeats star Wizkid in January 2026, during which Wizkid made comments about his place in relation to Fela Kuti’s legacy.
Wizkid’s statement that he was “bigger than Fela” sparked widespread debate across Nigeria, attracting reactions from entertainers, public figures and fans, with many discussing the influence and contributions of both artists to Nigerian music and global culture.
Seun Kuti, who continues to preserve his father’s Afrobeat legacy through performances and activities at the New Afrika Shrine, has repeatedly spoken about protecting Fela’s historical impact while engaging in debates surrounding Nigerian music.
